I attended a woodworking machinery show a few years back and ran across a saw like this and thought it was a great idea. Virutex has finally manufactured it for the US market. I had an opportunity to evaluate it for a show that will be airing in Spain and here is what I found:

It arrives packed in a box that keeps it safe for travel. I had a little assembly to do and found the instructions just adequate to say the least. I consider myself a pretty smart guy but I found it a bit of a challenge (I generally don't read instructions). The only real assembly is to attach the handle to the unit and make a few adjustments.

I made my first cut and found it to be a little out of square but the back fence was easily adjusted to cut just fine. I made a few cuts and found the saw to be both powerful and accurate. I was cutting standard 2x8 and was able to make the cut but I had to "lift" the board to finish the cut. After researching the blade diameter I found it comes from the factory with a blade that has a blade diameter of 11.8". A 12" blade will fit the saw so I think that if a 12" was installed it would make the full cut on a standard 2" x 8" board.

Once I was satisfied with the Miter feature I made the necessary adjustments to switch to the table saw feature. I set the fence to 2" and began ripping 2" x 8" wet pressure treated boards 48" long. About 5 cuts into the job I blew the fuse. The power was definately there but I pushed it passed the limits of the fuse. BTW, the fuse is a 15A fuse for a microwave that is not redily availble just anywhere. I found mine at an appliance parts store.

Anyway I made many cuts with dry lumber and found no problem at all with the new fuse.

All in all I feel that the saw would make a great tool for flooring installers, trim carpenters and General Contractors . It would also be great for a small home shop. I really don't see it being used for any large scale production applications. With a weight of just 46.3 lbs it is easily carried by one person. If I were an installer I would propably mount it into a convertable wheel stand from Lowes or Home Depot.
