The Lubricool Mist system was introduced to me by Tony Smith, a solid surface fabricator from  Tennessee. When I was first approached by Tony with this idea I was under the impression that it was developed to reduce airborne dust but I soon found that it did much more. Cooling cutting tools has been a standard in the metal working industry for years and Tony found it works well on solid surface with a few modifications.

Cooling eliminates burning.
If you look at a carbide tipped bit you’ve been using you will see a buildup of material on the bit just behind the cutting edge. This buildup is actually material that has been melted as it was cut and adhered to the bit. This melting is what causes the material to turn white as you rout a profile. This same white finish is what is so hard to bring back to a good finish by sanding. If the bit doesn’t heat up the melting doesn’t occur. If the melting doesn’t occur you don’t have near the sanding to bring it up to a good finish.

Most fabricators will sand a routed profile with 150, 220, 320 and 400 to get to a matte finish. Using this system eliminates the first 3 grits entirely (dark colors may vary slightly). The system eliminates chatter if you either run the router slower or finish with a second pass. Given the choice most fabricators would rather run the router a little longer and sand a lot less.

Cooling increase bit life.
Keeping the bit cool helps to keep the cutting edge sharp; most bits will last 3-5 longer than bits not being cooled.

Cooling saves bearings
Metal bearings will never need cleaned or lubricated if you use the LubriCool system. The liquid has a built in lubricant and rust preventative virtually eliminating any maintenance. If you’ve ever had a plastic bearing sleeve come off while you’re routing you know it can cost you a lot of time or even worse you can destroy the bowl. The sleeve comes off because the metal bearing gets hot and softens the inside surface of the sleeve allowing it to slip off. Using LubriCool Mist reduces your chances of loosing a sleeve to almost zero by reducing the temperature of the bearing.

Lubricool Liquid
LubriCool Liquid is what’s applied to the bit. The liquid is a patented formulation designed to be used with Acrylics, a key component in most solid surface materials. The liquid cools, lubricates and prevents rust on cutting tools. You bits stay clean and sharp longer. Tony showed me a bit that had over 2000 linear feet of use and it was as clean and sharp as a newly purchased bit. A gallon of LubriCool will last for 5-6 average kitchens but will vary depending on the settings you use.

The cost of the system ($339.00) and the coolant is quickly covered by the reduced labor to finish a profile and the reduced cost in bit sharpening and bearing costs.

This package includes a one gallon tank, 15' of hose and a bracket to fit most any router.

UPDATE:

The only drawback we could find with  the system is that it is easy to spill liquid from the drawer if you're not careful moving it. Kevin Phelps, a fabricator from Florida had this tip:

"I also heard how some people don't like how easy it was to spill the solution out of the Lubricool system so I wanted to tell you about what I did to it that I think makes it a little better.  I filled the tank with a large sponge like material and cut a hole in the center for the pick up tube.  It absorbs the solution and keeps it from sloshing which it now acts more like a printer cartridge.  I also changed the holding rod and put a clamp in place of it.  This lets me change it quickly from router to route to saw.  I hope this can be of some help."
